Centralised Backup
Rather than individual users saving work to their own desktops, all work is saved to the Server and a scheduled backup performed at least once a day. In the event of hardware failure or other disaster, restoring data for all users is simplified.
Data and network security
A domain based system allows the administrator of the network to set up a robust security policy to prevent unauthorised users from accessing sensitive information. With a permanently connected broadband internet, a strong password policy and firewall should be implemented
Centralised e-mail, calendar and task facilities
Email is collected by the Server using Microsoft Exchange. Individual users collect their email from the Server.
As all email for all users are stored in one central location on the Server, backing up this information is simplified as it is no longer fragmented around the network.
Microsoft Exchange also allows the sharing of calendars so that users can see at a glance where other members of staff are on a given day and schedule appointments on their behalf.
Centralised administration
As the Server controls the domain, the individual user's workstations operate in accordance with the Server's configuration. As a result there should be less work for the administrator to keep the network running smoothly.
Remote access - working away from the office
This gives authorised users the ability to work from any computer anywhere in the world as though they were sat at their desk. For users out on the road, or working from home this feature is invaluable.
Future expansion capabilities
As the business expands, the ability to add further devices to the network is very much simplified with a domain, whether the expansion takes the form of a new room in the same office or a different building in a different town or even a different country. Once configured correctly a domain with a router has no boundaries.
